Green Building in Malaysia

Malaysia’s first Shipping Container Home ?

I am a huge fan of Shipping Container Homes, so when I received an email yesterday from the team at Anand Bungalows with the attached photo gallery promoting their new green building in Malaysia I immediately committed to showcasing it here on BuildinginAsia.com

Located at Bukit Tinggi Pahang which is one of the most famous and popular holiday destinations in Malaysia this shipping container home has been designed by Architect Ken Kwok.

The design is over 2550 square feet and uses six of 40FT shipping containers

Mr Kwok’s design utilities the following design principles

  • smart design
  • upcycle & recycle
  • smart to build
  • energy efficiency
  • water conservation.

Mr Kwok feels that smart design is the heart of Green Building Design, with the orientation /setting of the building of primary importance.

This green building design uses recycled Shipping Containers or ISBU’s for their modular, flexible steel structure, speed in construction and cost effectiveness . Recycled and renewable building materials have been applied to the façade treatment, internal partitioning and roof covering.

Perhaps the greatest achievement of this design is the fact that despite having been built in a sub tropical Malaysia the developers claim that they dont require air conditioning or even a fan !

All due to the orientation and openings of the building, they say they let the building breath by itself by natural circulation plus cross ventilation.

Insulation is something that people always ask about when it comes to Shipping Container Homes this is how they approached it

1 layer of cement plastering internally

1 layer of existing metal wall

1 layer of recycled fiber cement board externally

During day time, the temperature inside remain 25 degree celsious, which is very comfortable for human body.

Rainwater is harvesting from the sloped roof for gardening.  Water efficient fittings, dual-flush water closer, flow restricted taps and aerated showerheads are used.

Construction costs are quoted as $45 SQFT
