Slab for the Sala Gazebo

We reached an important milestone today, we poured the concrete slab for the Sala Gazebo.
The concrete slab size is 4 M x 4 M – I used a modified waffle pod construction based on a 250mm deep slab and 9 pods approx 950 x 800 you can see the individual pods in the photo gallery below.

One of the major benefits of using waffle pod construction is the ability to accurately calculate the amount of concrete that will be required for the pour.
Traditional raft slab construction relies on trenching around the perimeter of the slab to create a reinforcing “beam” of concrete thicker than the slab itself, the challenge that this creates is not only the labour involved in digging the footings but also footing never tend to be “exact” so you have to estimate the average dimension of the footing which can lead to over or under ordering concrete for the pour. I ordered 4 cubic meters of concrete and using the waffle pod method not only did we not have to dig deep footings but we where just a single wheelbarrow over ordered, a very pleasing result !
